Sui JIANGUO

The contemporary Chinese artist Sui Jianguo has achieved worldwide recognition by using Maoist iconography as a type of exorcism. Jianguo's sculpture reflects the introspective artistic process in modern China: whether it is the realism of his early works or classical forms, his works essentially communicate what the "idols" of the past represent as they continue to occupy the unconscious of the contemporary Chinese population. His work is therefore perceived as a major index of the economic trend in art. He discusses the suitability of this system to the present and the metamorphoses brought on by new technologies, careful never to disregard the cultural values of his national heritage.
