Kiki Smith is an American artist born on January 18, 1954, in Nuremberg. She works across multiple disciplines, including sculpture, drawing, printmaking, textiles, film, and installation.
Her work focuses on the human body, mortality, birth, and regeneration. During the 1980s and 1990s, she addressed issues such as AIDS, feminism, and bodily vulnerability. Later, she expanded her practice toward nature, animals, and the relationship between humans and the living world. Her work is strongly influenced by feminist thought and an exploration of human fragility.
Daughter of sculptor Tony Smith, she moved to New York in the 1970s and became part of the Downtown art scene. She is now internationally recognized, with works held in major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
