Stéphane CALAIS

"My primary tool, drawing, naturally allows me to negotiate the different fields it crosses: that is to say all. The questions which then arise, depending on the mediums used (painting, mural drawings, collages of objects or images...), are age-old, but it is in their meeting and proximity that tensions, ellipses, or shortcuts are played out."

Close to the artists of the Supports/Surfaces group, Stéphane Calais practices drawing as well as screen printing, sculpture and installation. He delves gleefully into the history of art to nurture a practice that challenges hierarchies of genre or taste, marrying disciplines and mediums otherwise unlikely to coexist. Involving various shapes, styles, themes and references, Stéphane Calais's work cannot be reduced to a precise and defined aesthetic coherence. In perpetual mutation, his hybrid and heterogeneous art develops organically, appearing to redefine the conditions of his existence at every turn.
