"I can draw what I write, but I cannot write what I draw."

Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo, known as Corneille, is a self-taught Belgian painter. A member of the CoBrA group along with Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Dotremont, and Constant, he is inspired by the African art he encountered on numerous trips to the continent. Characterized by imaginary landscapes painted in strong warm tones, his works present a sensuality expressed through an expressionist vocabulary; the woman (who represents the earth in the artist's language), the bird (the male presence and the artist himself), the sun and the snake (symbols of the female and male sex) as well as the cat, are almost omnipresent.
