Chiharu SHIOTA

« The threads are woven into each other. They tangle. They tear. They unravel. They mirror the feelings and pains that run through our lives. Cutting, intertwining and knotting threads one after the other encourages me to create a whole new universe within the confines of the sculpture's frame. »

The Japanese artist, Chiharu Shiota creates places devoid of any human presence, of any physical presence. The threads of memory, the imprints of time weave spider webs linking inert objects to past time, to instants, to presences that no longer exist except in memory. Using woven threads, the artist combines performance, body art and installations in a process that places the body at its center. Her artistic practice explores the notions of temporality, movement, memory and dreams and requires both mental and physical involvement of the viewer.
